About the Director
Ruggero Deodato (1939–2022) built his reputation on films designed to make audiences deeply uncomfortable, and none more so than Cannibal Holocaust (1980) — a film so convincing in its violence that Deodato was briefly investigated on suspicion of having made an actual snuff film. He was cleared only by producing the "deceased" actors alive on Italian television.
Cannibal Holocaust's structure — a documentary crew's footage recovered after their disappearance in the Amazon — is now recognized as the direct ancestor of the found-footage genre that would explode decades later with The Blair Witch Project and everything after. The film's mix of staged mockumentary footage and real animal killings remains genuinely controversial, and it has been banned or heavily censored in numerous countries since its release.
Deodato worked steadily across the cannibal and post-apocalyptic genres through the 1980s (Cut and Run, House on the Edge of the Park), but it's Cannibal Holocaust that cemented his historical importance — a film that essentially invented a storytelling technique while remaining one of the most debated works in exploitation cinema. For collectors interested in the formal history of horror, his catalog is a direct line to how modern horror learned to fake reality.
